Everyone procrastinates at times. It doesn't take much to think of other things you'd rather be doing. Since procrastination is one of those things that are hard to stop completely, maybe we can just focus on curbing it a little. Even if you promptly take care of something really important, are there not things that you are delaying taking care of?
When we procrastinate, we unknowingly try to avoid depressing feelings and emotions that can lead to feeling blue. It might work temporarily, but those gloomy feelings are bound to come back as soon as you acknowledge that nothing got accomplished. So, what's the best way to deal with this?
Get organized. Now don't procrastinate on this also. Make lists but keep it simple and realistic. Mix small and big tasks. Remember that even small things done are accomplishments.
When a task is completed, mark it off. Watching your list get smaller and smaller will make you feel very good. You'll be surprised how this gives you a feeling of success and spurs you on to greater success. Classes in organization are offered in many places and may be just right for you.
Prioritize your lists. It's possible that some of your important tasks are not fun at all to take care of. Should you pay bills that are due to avoid a late payment penalty or you should you clean out a kitchen utility drawer? Meeting deadlines gives your morale a boost and sometimes your pocketbook too.
Take a step at a time and slice the work pie into smaller pieces. Before you know it the whole pie has been eaten. Everything starts with taking the first step. A seemingly impossible list of tasks is no different. By the yard it's hard, but by the inch it's a cinch.
Have realistic expectations. If taking care of something big overwhelms you, maybe you can take care of small things somehow related to the big task. If you do that, the big task will suddenly appear easier.
Get a calendar to list dates and appointments and to make sure you meet all deadlines for both short and long term goals. Refer to the calendar, and don't book more errands and appointments than you can keep up with. Unfilled space on your calendar can make you feel peaceful.
You are not expected to be perfect at everything you do. All humans do something wrong sometimes. Try to watch outtakes of a TV show if you can.
Begin. Each day schedule time to work on the task at hand and eventually the task will be finished. Make sure you reward yourself if you get something accomplished, and the thought of the reward will push you forward. Go back to work refreshed.
Schedule enough time to get the job done, and don't be too hard on yourself. Be flexible. Extensions can usually be had but don't work with this in mind. It's hard to work on a project if you feel nobody else but you can work at it. All good leaders do well if they allow others to get involved, and when all fails, they always have another ace up their sleeve.
