Low self-esteem can cause a lot of problems, both emotionally and physically, when left untreated. Here are some ways that it can threaten your health and what you can do to avoid them.
What is depression? The first thing that happens to a person who has low self-esteem is depression. They isolate themselves from friends and family as they start to feel worthless. Because they're encouraged to think negative thoughts about themselves in isolation, the depression goes deeper. Suicide can be the result in some severe cases.
What is anxiety? Low self-esteem means low confidence in oneself, and this can cause people to have panic attacks whenever they're faced with situations they'd rather not be in.
Stress. Stress can seem enhanced for someone who suffers from low self-esteem, despite the fact that it's part of everyone's lives. Steps should be taken to avoid some stress but since they're not likely to do this, their anxiety builds up.
Weight Gain. People often try to fill the void of self-esteem with food. They ultimately start gaining weight to the point of being obese. Gaining too much weight can cause a lot of health problems like diabetes, heart problems, etc.
Weight Loss. While some people gain weight, others tend to binge and purge their food or starve themselves, thinking they will gain a more satisfying appearance. However, some would come to a point where they would need professional help because they never become satisfied with the way they look and becomes very sick.
How addictions can affect us. Street or prescription drugs becomes an addiction for some people. For a moment they live in a different without problems as they get high on drugs. But the price they have to pay could be brain damage or even death if the addiction isn't dealt with.
What is alcohol abuse? For some people, turning to alcohol is a way of feeling better about themselves and forgetting their problems. Because alcohol provides them with the confidence they long for but haven't developed, they substitute it as their friend.
Besides making them feel almost invincible, they would do things they normally wouldn't dare to do. Over time, as alcohol becomes an addiction, liver problems are caused as well as heart disease and even cancer.
These are only a few of the things that low self-esteem can cause. It's important that the person with little or no self-esteem gets some help in building their confidence back up. These health problems can occur if left untreated for too long.
